Latest Advancements in Surgical Technology and Patient Care

Catholic Health provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art orthopedic care from diagnosis to surgery, rehabilitation and beyond, using the most advanced comprehensive rehabilitation techniques and surgical procedures that are complemented by a complete network of hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, outpatient centers, home care services, and patient and community education activities.

Our doctors are at the forefront of significant minimally invasive orthopedic surgical procedures designed to get you moving sooner, with fewer complications and less pain, including:

• Total hip replacement and partial knee resurfacing procedures using the precision of revolutionary robotic joint surgery with the MAKOplasty® system. Kenmore Mercy is the first hospital in the greater Buffalo area to use this technology. MAKOplasty® is an option for people with either non-inflammatory or inflammatory degenerative joint disease, and is designed to assist surgeons in attaining a new level of surgical precision.

• Partial knee replacements using the unicondylar knee implant – invented by a Kenmore Mercy orthopedic surgeon and now used around the world – to preserve healthy bone and extend the life of the replacement. More than 90% of our patients who undergo this procedure go home the very same day.

• “Custom fit” knee replacement surgery that preserves healthy bone and ligaments, resulting in better range of motion. Sisters Hospital was the first to perform this procedure in WNY; only 400 doctors nationwide perform this specialized surgery.

• Mobile Bearing Hip™ technology that offers patients undergoing hip replacement increased stability and range of motion by mimicking the patient’s natural anatomy. In national lab testing, this technology resulted in a 97% decrease in wear compared to conventional hip implants.

• Hip resurfacing (using the Mobile Bearing Hip™ technology), the latest and less invasive alternative to total hip replacement for arthritis sufferers, designed to help conserve healthy bone tissue.

• Hip arthroscopy (keyhole joint surgery), one of the newest procedures for treating hip pain. Kenmore Mercy is Catholic Health’s first hospital to offer this procedure designed to relieve pain, restore function, and, for some patients, eliminate the need for hip replacement surgery.

Plus, Kenmore Mercy Hospital, an orthopedic campus of excellence and home to the Knee & Hip Center, is putting the finishing touches on a new $5.7 million medical/surgical inpatient nursing unit geared toward orthopedic patients.

The 15,300 square foot unit will include 24 private rooms, a visitors’ lounge, a staff lounge and two nursing stations, and will offer the latest in comprehensive rehabilitation services. The project will help the hospital meet increasing demand for orthopedic services in the region. Last year, Kenmore Mercy performed more than 2,000 orthopedic surgeries. The new unit is expected to open in later this summer.

These advancements and our forward-thinking approaches to physical and occupational therapy at our hospitals, outpatient centers, subacute rehab and home care agencies, create an award-winning orthopedic continuum of care that is second to none. So when knee, hip, back or other joint pain has you off course, turn to Catholic Health. It will be one of the best moves you ever made.
