For those who suffer a hip fracture, multiple fractures, stroke, or complications from neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease or Multiple Sclerosis, the road to recovery often begins with medical rehabilitation.

Catholic Health offers two inpatient Medical Rehabilitation Units (MRU) at Kenmore Mercy Hospital and Mercy Hospital of Buffalo. Unlike subacute rehab facilities, MRUs combine daily physician oversight with a comprehensive approach to care to help patients recover more quickly and to their fullest level of independence.

Providing daily therapy, medical care and other needed services, the Medical Rehabilitation Units are designed to improve the health, function and quality of life for patients making the transition from hospital to home or to another level of care. Both units offer specialized physical, occupational and speech therapy to help patients restore lost function and return to independent living.

More than just well equipped facilities, the MRUs offer a team approach to care. Dedicated teams of medical and clinical staff work exclusively in the MRU, combining their distinct areas of expertise to create a rehabilitation program that is tailored to each patient and family’s individual goals.

Directed by board-certified physiatrists (physicians who specialize in physical rehabilitation), the team includes rehab nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, dieticians, social workers, chaplains, and other specialists and support staff. Relying on proven treatment and evaluation methods, the physician-led team monitors each patient’s progress to ensure their rehab goals are being met.

Both MRUs offer the highest level of inpatient rehabilitation by a skilled and caring staff to help patients achieve the best possible outcomes. For the past two years, the MRU at Kenmore Mercy Hospital has been ranked in the top 10% of over 800 inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRF) in the United States by Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation (UDSMR), an independent data advisor.

Patients spend, on average, about two weeks in the MRU. For more information on Catholic Health’s Medical Rehab Units, call 447-6205 or log on to www.chs buffalo.org/mru.
